Picture Perfect

The final 2 corners of the Red Bull Ring have a large Austrian flag painted on the run-off areas. By framing the car from the rear and using a long telephoto lens, you create this graphic image where the car is composed within the national colours.

The unpredictable weather makes it very tricky not only for the engineers and drivers, but also us photographers too. This huge cloud enveloped the circuit during FP2 and before it dumped its rain on us, I managed to capture this scenic shot.

Jolyon’s focus is on his car set up and telemetry. By crouching down and framing his eyes behind the wing mirror, all focus is placed on his expression and concentration, without him even knowing that the photograph is being taken.

A photographers dream; a wet track and lots of spray, then for a moment highlighted by a burst of sunshine. Here Jolyon is captured at the final turn, before he heads down the straight to start another lap.

Canon 1DX, 500mm lens, 1/1250th sec @ f5

The modern day version of an autograph or a handshake. A young fan snaps a selfie with Jolyon as he arrives into the circuit. By using a shallow depth of field the focus is placed on the split second moment.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/1000th sec @ f4

The circuit is covered in alpine flowers and grasses. By focusing on these yellow flowers in the foreground as a blur of yellow RS16 flashes past in the background, you end up with an image that could only be created in Austria.

Canon 1DX, 500mm lens, 1/250th sec @ f11

Twenty pitstop mechanics work in unison to change 4 tyres in under 3 seconds. This shot is captured from high up in the media centre and gives an elevated view of a split second event.

Canon 1DX, 500mm lens, 1/1000th sec @ f6.3

Kevin leads Jolyon during the race. This image captured from the top of the hill at turn two gives a wonderful scenic view of the track and the surrounding hills.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/500th sec @ f8

The traditional Thursday track-walk is popular in Austria. Engineers and drivers walk every circuit and note track conditions and kerbs. The mountains and trees of the Red Bull Ring make it even more enjoyable.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/1000th sec @ f4.5

Practice makes perfect, and the concentration of this member of the pitstop crew shows how keen they are to get every pitstop as perfect as possible. A long telephoto lens freezes the action during one of many pitstop practice sessions.
