Picture Perfect

Team mates on track together. The Bahrain Circuit is located in the middle of a desert, so to show the environment I have included some rocks and desert sand into the foreground to give a sense of the barren environment.

Bright and colourful run-off areas are part of the ambiance of the Bahrain circuit. I have used the shapes and colours here to create my shot, and by positioning the car in the top right hand corner have ended up with a graphic image.

This shot is the product of using the surroundings of the circuit. The palm trees lining the track are illuminated with hundreds of twinkling fairy light, and by shooting through these fairy lights with a wide aperture, you create this wonderful lighting effect.

The bright spotlights of the circuit give us photographers the chance to experiment. By using a very slow shutter-speed and by panning smoothly with the car you can create some interesting light trails.

Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/15th sec @ f8

Sparks fly from the back of Kevin’s R.S.16 as he hits the bumps of the Bahrain Circuit. A steady hand and following the car through the frame, captures this high-speed shot.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/13th sec @ f7.1

Jolyon ventures out of the garage into the low evening sun. By shooting at a fast shutter speed and exposing for the bright light at the edge of the garage you get this high contrast image.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/1250th sec @ f.5.6

The R.S.16 is all tucked up for the night. The cars ’sleep’ in these sealed bags during parc ferme conditions. A rare quiet moment in the garage as the hard work is finished and everything is ready for race-day.

Canon 1DX, 50mm lens, 1/125th sec @ f4

By using a shallow depth-of-field and focusing on the detail of the front wing, you get this fascinating close up view into the finer detail and shape of the car.

Canon 1DX, 50mm lens, 1/125th sec @ f2.8

You can see by the expression and anticipation in the eyes of reserve driver Esteban Ocon that he is keen to try the R.S.16. Here he gets to sit in the cockpit and fit his seat prior to the weekend’s on-track action.

Practice makes perfect and the team go through their rigorous pitstop practice over and over again. The car is rolled into position, so it gives a good chance for us to use a long shutter speed and slow the action down, to give this dynamic effect.
