Picture Perfect

A shot that sums the weekend up. Un-seasonal cold and wet weather greeted us in Montreal. Here a rain drop running off th front wing is frozen in time by a fast shutter speed and shallow depth of field.
Canon 1DX, 50mm lens, 1/2000th sec @ f2.8

The competition between the drivers is not just reserved for the race track. A promotional event with the new Renault Twizy in Montreal’s city centre gives Kevin the first flying laps of the weekend.
A slow shutter speed and smooth pan, keeps the sharpness in the car.
Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/60th sec @ f22

Jolyon sits patiently prior to FP!. Helmet on a focused for the valuable practice ahead, his gloves laid out on the top of the nose ready for action.
Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/125th sec @ f4.5

Esteban Ocon as a reserve driver has to absorb as much information as possible as he makes his way up the ladder to a hopeful F1 seat. By using the lights and colours of the telemetry monitors and a narrow depth of field you create this magical image.
Canon 1DX, 50mm lens, 1/250th @ f1.4

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is left untouched between F1 GP’s. It has an overgrown feel, as if the forest and trees are consuming the man made features. Here a small window in the foliage is the perfect ’window’ to frame the passing RS16.
Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/1000th @ f6.3

A bight and sunny day greeted the drivers for FP2. This vantage point above turn 2 is a great spot for a scenic image of the cars attacking yet another practice lap.
Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/30th sec @ f22

Taken from the top of a grandstand this shot gives you an idea of the type of image you can create even without trackside access. By focusing on the track, and panning slowly using the crowd as a foreground you get this colourful image.
Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/125th sec @ f16

The narrow track and imposing walls of the Montreal Circuit push the drivers to the limit. The exit of the chicane at turn 4 pushes them closer and closer still. Photographed through the overgrown bushes which highlight the shadows of the trees.
Canon 1DX, 500mm lens, 1/1000th sec@ f5.6

The ’Wall of Champions’ has claimed its fair few victims over the years. The drivers have to push as hard as possible through the final chicane but are then greeted by this imposing wall. Most are millimetre perfect.... some are not. Here Jolyon gets it just right. About as close as a photographer can get to an F1 car at full speed.
Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/60th sec @ f22

By standing within the trees that line the circuit, and panning smoothly with a wide angle lens you can give an added extra feeling of motion as Kevin attacks a fast qualifying lap.
