Picture Perfect

A wide angle scenic shot of Kevin driving around the street track of Baku, by using a 16mm lens and a fast shutter speed you create an atmospheric shot that includes the background and location just as much as the on-track action.

Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/100th sec @ f6.3

The much talked about narrow chicane by the Old City was the iconic corner of the new Baku City Circuit. The drivers had to be precise, but it creates a unique photographic perspective and really shows the flavour of the Azerbaijan track.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/640th sec @ 7.1

Finding your way around a new circuit as a photographer is crucial. In this instance by obtaining access to the rooftop of a trackside building, we have found a new angle that includes a local mosque as the R.S.16 passes by.

Canon 1DX, 16-35mm lens, 1/100th sec @ f5.6

The Baku track has a unique feature in the fact that the cars pass back and forward down a ‘dual carriageway’. An elevated position ensures that we capture the action, with the stunning skyline creating the perfect background.

Canon1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/500th sec @ f9

A wonderfully scenic aerial view of the Caspian Sea and the stunning Baku street circuit. Taken from on high at the top of the media centre, held in a hotel for this race only, this incredible view shows Baku at its best with a wide angle shot.

Canon 1DX 16-35mm lens, 1.500th sec @ f7.1

This elevated view gives a real contrast between the historical Baku old town and the ultra modern world of F1. The scale of the image is highlighted by focusing on the small car in amongst its historical environment.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/500th sec @ f8

This corner, juxtaposed with the UNESCO-protected Old City, quickly became iconic with its uphill trajectory and the confines of the narrow street. By shooting it from the rear in the afternoon when the light is low, you get this strong composition of light and dark shadows as the cars delicately slot their way through the tight streets.

Canon 1DX, 70-200mm lens, 1/1000th sec @ 6.3

By using a fixed 50mm lens and a narrow depth of field, the focus is fixed on Kevins helmet, whilst the light shines on his steering wheel create the atmospheric glow.

Canon1 DX, 50mm lens, 1/125th sec @ f2.8

It’s a well practised art, the F1 drivers signature, but it’s over within a split second. Here rather than focusing on the drivers face, The view has turned to the detail of the autograph itself. A wide aperture keeps the eye focused on the signature itself.

Canon 1DX, 50mm lens, 1/250th sec@ f2.8

A good example showing that you don’t need full trackside access to capture great images. This shot is taken from the grandstand at turn 16 and gives a great scenic view of a stunning new circuit.
