Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) has the honour of being the season’s first poleman in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0. Posting the fastest time in Saturday morning’s qualifying session, the Dutchman will be joined on the front row by Aurelien Panis (ART Junior Team), with Egor Orudzhev (Tech 1 Racing), Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam) and Alexander Albon (KTR) lining up behind them.
First out on the track, the drivers in Group A took turns at the top of the timesheets before Ignazio D’Agosto (Koiranen GP) laid down a marker. The Italian’s time was then improved on by Gustav Malja (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Andrea Pizzitola (Manor MP Motorsport), though the last word went to Aurelien Panis with a flying lap of 1:56.127.
The racers in Group B promptly picked up the pace, with Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) proving fastest of all, eventually clocking a time of 1:55.474 three minutes from the close to become the first polesitter of the year.
Nyck de Vries: “We worked very hard yesterday on getting the best possible package, and it was a case of putting everything together to get the first pole of the year. Our race pace was good in testing and at the ALPS meeting at Imola. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes, though my first priority is to get a good start.”
