E. DIEMERT, Renault Sport Technologies’ Design Director talks us through the interior of the New Mégane GT

“The work we’ve carried out inside goes hand in hand with the exterior design. We wanted to reinforce the idea of the cockpit, which is one of the core features of the New Mégane. We’ve restyled the seats, which now have a built-in headrest and are much more body-hugging, and we’ve put a lot of effort into the leatherwork too. We’ve enhanced the seats and come up with a very distinctive design. We based our approach on creating hints of blue in the cabin, through stripes running around the seat and through top stitching as well. We gave ourselves the freedom to play with both types of styling cues, creating blue hints that pick up on the exterior colour and tie in perfectly with the GT identity.

In addition to the seats we’ve brought in key features in terms of ergonomics and driver feel. We’ve come up with a bespoke steering wheel and designed a model-specific airbag. We’ve moved the logo and placed it in a circular insert, which is also a sporty touch. The steering wheel comes complete with two paddles, which control the gearbox, and there’s also an aluminium pedal set with rubber inserts, providing another distinctive touch. The gear lever has also been decked out with a colour scheme and materials.

As for the instrumentation, the technology used in the New Mégane has allowed us to bring everything together and accentuate the sporty look. The Sport driving mode provides continuity of expression with the other modes. Flick up to Race mode, however, and you take a step closer to the world of competitive motorsport.

I’m proud of this car, because of what it expresses and the coherence it projects.

A sporty feel, enhancing the driver experience
There’s a special emphasis on the finish, quality of materials and harmony of the cabin. The dashboard extends in a continuous sweep to the top door cappings, and also runs from the lower edge of the dashboard to the centre console. The New Mégane GT features a full-grain Nappa leather-trimmed steering wheel with elegant chrome detailing, which is echoed on the instruments, air vent, console and switch surrounds, which combine to create an elegant finish.
The ergonomically enhanced bespoke steering wheel, sports pedals in aluminium, special gear lever and steering-wheel mounted gearshift paddles have been designed for sporty driving. The tall, broad centre console incorporates a fore/aft adjustable armrest and is enhanced by two slender lines of glowing light, the hue of which can be personalised thanks to Multi-Sense technology.

A high-tech cockpit at the top end of the class
A raft of high-tech controls, positioned around the driver, rework the concept of a cockpit with an L-shaped layout.

-* Colour head-up display
This retractable display enhances safety and comfort and makes driving aids easy to read and use. Without even taking their eyes off the road, the driver can take in the most important information, such as navigation instructions and driving aids (ADAS).

-* An 8.7-inch tablet display: a first in the class
The New Mégane GT comes equipped with the R-Link 2 and its vertical 8.7-inch (22cm) display screen, identical to the one fitted in the New Espace and the Talisman. Unique in the class, it boasts a screen with capacitive ‘pinch & zoom’ technology for easier use, much like that of a smartphone or tablet.
R-Link 2 includes voice recognition for safe and simplified operation of the navigation, telephone, apps and radio. Its three customisable home pages allow swift access to the most frequently used functions. A connectivity package, including a 12-month subscription to TomTom LIVE services (depending on the country) and access to the R-Link Store, expands its scope.

-* A 7-inch colour TFT instrument display panel
The content of the 7-inch colour TFT (Thin Film Transistor) instrument display can be customised, depending on the driving mode selected, with the Race mode being a notable addition. Meanwhile, hints of blue in the cabin, trim and topstitching pick up on the new Iron Blue exterior colour.

High-quality sound with the Bose® Audio system
The New Mégane GT offers the option of high-quality sound thanks to the Bose® Audio system. Engineers from BOSE worked in close co-operation with their counterparts at Renault to optimise the integration of the nine speakers, subwoofer and digital amplifier, resulting in sound that is precise, balanced, tailor-engineered and crystal clear.

Sculpted, wrap-around seats in partnership with Alcantara®
Sculpted, wrap-around seats provide optimum comfort and support thanks to dual density foam.
Taking their inspiration from the worlds of interior furnishings and leather goods, the seat materials are warm and modern. Stitching quality has been reworked, with special attention being paid to the detailing of the top stitching on the seats and door casings.
The wrap-around seats come with integral headrests, blue top stitching and a chequered sports logo, and provide comfort and firm lateral support.
The New Mégane GT is available with plush velour developed with Alcantara®, giving a powerful lustre and an intense black 3D effect. The heated seats come with manual lumbar adjustment.
Three different upholstery choices are available: fabric, Alcantara® leather with blue stripes and Alcantara® leather with black stripes.

Superb stowage space
The New Mégane GT’s boot capacity of 434 litres (384 dm3 VDA) is the second largest in the compact car sector and is complemented by interior stowage space totalling 25 litres. Rear knee room of 175mm is a 20mm improvement on that of the third-generation Mégane, while shoulder width (1,441mm at the front, 1,390mm in the rear) is among the best in the class. When it comes to rear passenger space and boot capacity, the New Mégane GT certainly delivers.
