Renault Sport Academy Driver Christian Lundgaard had a weekend to remember as he was crowned the 2017 Drivers’ Champion of the SMP F4 NEZ Championship with a round to spare.

Needing to beat rival Alexander Smolyar by 11 points to clinch the title at the penultimate round in Moscow, Christian held his nerve and took two wins to claim the championship.

Christian’s weekend got off to the perfect start as he stormed to pole position in the opening qualifying session on Saturday. The 16-year-old made a clean getaway in race one and controlled proceedings with confidence to take the 25 points.

It was a similar story in the second race as Christian remained composed from the lights and cruised to his ninth victory of the season. The title was within reach for Christian after Smolyar retired from race two and had to finish in the top two in race three to take the title showdown to the final round.

Christian continued his dominance on Sunday by taking pole position in the second qualifying session.

However, the final race wasn’t without drama for the Dane as he mistakenly took a drive through penalty and slipped to an 11th place finish. But Smolyar could only muster a fifth place meaning Christian took the title and will head to the final round in Assen in October as the Drivers’ Champion.

Christian Lundgaard (MP Motorsport, #5)
1st (Drivers’ Champion) – 255 points – 18/21 races completed

“It’s an amazing feeling to win the Drivers’ Championship in my first season in single-seater racing. I would like to thank my team for being very supportive and for all the help they have given me. I had a really good weekend – it was almost perfect with the two pole positions and two wins – but race three was disappointing. I made a big mistake and we need to learn from them to ensure they don’t happen again. I need to focus on the next race, but for now I will celebrate winning the title with my team.”

Next Round: Assen, The Netherlands. 20th-22nd October
