Carlos Sainz visited Renault Sport’s Enstone base for the first-time last week as he gears up for his first outing with the team in Austin this weekend. It was a busy couple of days for Carlos as he met up with his new engineers and other members of staff on Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for the US Grand Prix.

What are your first impressions of Enstone?
My first impressions are extremely positive, Renault are a massive team and the facility is really big here. I have been able to meet a lot of people which has been good too. I can see Renault are adding new buildings which is very encouraging and it looks exciting for the future.

Did you find time to see the new buildings?
I’ve had a look around the factory and you can see everything is being built around the programme and it’s a real privilege to be involved in the progression here and seeing the new resources. I’m very excited to be chosen to help the team and I hope to help them reach their goal of going to the top of Formula 1.

What’s it like meeting new people from the team?
It’s difficult as I’m not very good with names! I have a new challenge ahead with all these new people, but it’s a good way to motivate myself to get to know new faces in this new team – especially joining four races early – as it gives us a kickstart ahead of 2018.

What are the challenges going into the USA?
It will be about adapting to the new car as I’m sure it will feel very different to the car I’ve been driving for the last three years. It will take a bit of time for adaptation, but it will be progressive – little by little – and I aim to be on the pace as soon as possible. There are big challenges ahead but I’m looking forward to it and I will enjoy finding the limits of the car and finding the right set-up. Austin is one of my favourite tracks on the calendar, overtaking is possible there. Sector one is very impressive in a Formula 1 car, and the 2017 cars will be very fast there! I am really looking forward to it and it helps that my first race for Renault is on a track that I like.
