A day in the life of… Artem Markelov
Test and Development Driver.

What’s your job responsibility?
I’m the Test & Development Driver for Renault Sport Formula One Team and Racing Driver for Russian Time in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. At Renault I work a lot on the simulator doing some testing to improve this year’s car and develop next year’s car as well. It’s beneficial to work with the Formula 1 team to better understand what happens in this world and to improve my experiences and skills.

Describe a typical day in your job?
It depends if it’s a race week or not. If it’s not, then I’m probably travelling somewhere. Between races we go to England, then to Italy and back to Russia sometimes. We go to England to go to the Russian Time base in Norfolk and to Enstone for the Formula 1 simulator. It’s exciting to do all that. It’s quite a lot of travelling in this job! When I’m not on the move, I’m at home trying to recover from the race weekend.

How did you get the job?
I started in karting and moved from Russian karting into European championships. That was a big challenge as there were over 200 people fighting for the top. It was a nice experience to learn to fight on track and it was also good to learn about the mental side of the sport too. After karting, I went into single-seaters.

I started off in ADAC Formel Masters, finishing fourth, and then German Formula 3. I was seventh in my first year and second in the second year, fighting for the title. I then went to GP2 and Formula 2 and managed to gain a lot of experience in that category. I was runner-up in 2017, which was awesome, and I signed with Renault ahead of the 2018 season. This year, with a new Formula 2 car, we’ve struggled a bit, but we’ve kept working hard and picked up a lot of good results. It’s been excellent working with Renault as well.

What is your most memorable moment so far?
Winning in Monaco in 2016 from fifteenth on the grid. Another good moment was when I signed the contract with Renault!

What’s the worst part of your job?
Training. I don’t like doing it!

And the best part of your job?
Driving the Formula 1 car, of course!

How do you unwind?
Sitting at home doing nothing. That’s my favourite thing to do and definitely my favourite hobby.

What do you do before going to sleep?
I like watching movies and I do that all the time. I like the Ocean’s films, there are some good actors in them; Pitt, Clooney.

If you weren’t doing your job, what would you be doing? It’s a hard question because all my life I’ve been racing. I’d like to be a billionaire, that would be nice. Does that count?
